India Backs Five Spinners

India has been experimenting with left-handed batters in the top order, a strategy strongly supported by head coach Gautam Gambhir. The shift started in Sri Lanka last July when Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, and Rishabh Pant were tried at No.3. Axar Patel also stepped in at No.5, a move that continued into the England series.

Gambhir defended the approach, saying, “That’s the way cricket is meant to be played.” He emphasized the importance of impact over batting order, stating, “If you have the option of putting a quality left-hander in the middle, why won’t you do that?”

The strategy contrasts with the previous approach under Rahul Dravid, where India’s top five were all right-handers during the 2023 World Cup run to the final. Gambhir, however, dismisses traditional statistics, instead focusing on effectiveness at key positions. Axar Patel has performed well in the role, scoring 44 in Sri Lanka and 52 and 41* against England.

India also made a bold selection choice by bringing in Varun CV for the Champions Trophy, replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal. With five spinners in the squad and only three frontline pacers, questions arise about balance. Gambhir defended the move, stating, “The only reason he was picked was because we wanted another wicket-taking option in the middle.”

Varun’s inclusion means he will compete with Kuldeep Yadav for a spot in the playing XI, with decisions likely based on opposition line-ups. Against Bangladesh, for example, India might prefer Kuldeep to counter their left-handers.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul remains India’s first-choice wicketkeeper. Gambhir clarified the situation, saying, “At the moment, KL is the number one wicket-keeper and he’s delivered for us.” While Rishabh Pant is in the squad, opportunities will depend on circumstances.

India’s approach continues to evolve, with strategic selections and batting order adjustments shaping the team’s future.
