The West Indies team are not playing their premier fast bowler Alzarri Joseph in the first of the three ODI matches at home against India being played at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Hosts West Indies do not have much to play for in this ODI series against India as they have not qualified for the ODI World Cup 2023 to be played in India later this year after their poor performance in the recently concluded Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, West Indies captain Shai Hope stated that pace bowler Alzarri Joseph is not part of the West Indies playing 11 for this WI vs IND 1st ODI match. However, the right-arm pace bowler played both of the recent Test matches against India at home. While playing in 61 ODI matches so far for West Indies, Alzarri has picked a total of 101 wickets at an economy of less than 6. But the West Indies team have gone ahead with the likes of Jayden Seales, Dominic Drakes as the two frontline pacers alongside all-rounder Romario Shepherd. The hosts are playing two spinners in Gudakesh Motie and Yannic Cariah.

“Every series means a lot. We’ve got to play each game and each series to win. Now is a good opportunity to do so against a top team. We’ve got some quality spinners as well, the aim is to bowl in the right areas, make sure we capitalize on our chances. We dropped a few chances the last time, need to be clinical on the field, and post a good total. Bit of moisture, maybe tricky in the morning. We need to make sure we assess, and post a good total. Oshane Thomas, Alzarri Joseph, Kevin Sinclair and Keacy Carty are out,” said West Indies captain Shai Hope during the toss.
