The visitors are in a dominating position at the end of the day’s play, having not lost a wicket in their first innings in response to India’s 345 in the first innings. The New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Will Young showed their tenacity and perseverance to finish the day unbeaten on 129/0. They played risk free cricket and had answers to everything thrown at them.
Young was the more aggressive of the two, and he hit several beautiful strokes throughout his undefeated run. Latham made a gritty half-century after surviving three close calls. On three instances, he was given out on the field, and each time he was turned down on review.

India had begun the proceedings on 258/4 earlier in the day. Tim Southee was a cut above the rest, ripping through India’s lower order to dismiss them for 345 runs. Shreyas Iyer smashed his maiden Test century, joining a select group of batters who have scored a century on their Test debut. Ashwin played some delightful strokes during his brief innings. India eventually scored 345 runs. Southee concluded with a fifer, while Jamieson and Ajaz Patel took three and two wickets each.
