IND vs ENG 1st Test: An unusual incident happened on the final day of the first Test match between India and England at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. India fast bowler Ishant Sharma was on strike in the 57th over when he uncomfortably defended a Jofra Archer short delivery off the back foot and survived a hit-wicket dismissal after it was learned that appeal against him was done on a dead ball.
The incident took place in the 57th over of India’s second innings batting when Ishant Sharma was facing Jofra Archer with nine wickets down. At first, it seemed as if Ishant got out hit-wicket but replays suggested that India pacer had not dislodged the bails as they had fallen before the ball was bowled, after which it was termed a dead-ball by the umpire.

Here are a few reactions to the incident –
The bails falling off mysteriously before the ball is bowled with the 11th man Ishant Sharma at the batting crease reminds me of the dialogue from welcome-" even the pyre is calling out for the dead body!" #INDvsENG_2021 #JoeRoot #jimmyanderson Congrats! @englandcricket

England takes 1-0 lead
Though Ishant Sharma didn’t dislodge the bails in the 57th over and survived the hit-wicket appeal, his partner Jasprit Bumrah was removed by England pace battery Jofra Archer in the 59th over as the hosts suffered a devastating 227-run defeat in the first of the four test matches against England. England captain Joe Root was declared the Man of the Match for his masterclass double century against the hosts in the Chennai Test.
The second Test of the series will also be played in Chennai on a different surface. The second India vs England Test starts on February 13.
