India is set to face Bangladesh in the first Test of a two-match series starting on 19 September 2024. All the eyes will be on the pitch at MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) Chennai. The nature of the wicket will play a pivotal role in how the selection strategy goes for the two teams and how things pan out.
MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report for IND vs BAN 1st Test
The MA Chidambaram Stadium is a venue traditionally known to favor spinners, but things could be different this time around. Chepauk boasts nine pitches, three of which are composed of red soil—imported from Mumbai—while the others have black soil. According to reports, the pitch for the upcoming Test is expected to be red soil, known for offering good bounce and carry for both fast bowlers and spinners alike.
Red soil surfaces, unlike the black soil variety, tend to retain their bounce for longer periods, aiding both pacers and batsmen who enjoy stroke-making on lively surfaces. With the pitch likely to provide more assistance to fast bowlers in the initial phases, discussions have surfaced about India possibly fielding three seamers—a tactic rarely seen in home conditions, especially at Chepauk.

Chennnai Test Pitch to influence India Playing XI?
The nature of the Chennai wicket will weigh heavily on India’s team selection for the opening Test. With captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir at the helm, the team must decide whether to embrace the pace-friendly conditions or stick to their traditional spin-heavy approach. If the pitch is expected to offer prolonged assistance to fast bowlers, India might consider playing three pacers—something they haven’t done in a home Test since the 2019 Kolkata Day-Night match against Bangladesh.
With five important matches scheduled in Australia later this season, preparing on a bouncy wicket could serve as a valuable rehearsal. However, the risk of playing a pace-heavy lineup on home soil could backfire if the conditions don’t work in India’s favor, inviting criticism. In such a case, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be picked as lead spinners. Among quick bowlers, India may go with a combination of three pacers — Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and one of Yash Dayal or Akash Deep.

India’s last encounter with Bangladesh on home soil in the 2019 Day-Night Test saw them deploy a pace-heavy lineup that paid off, but that match was played under different conditions with the pink ball assisting pacers under lights. This time, the decision won’t be as straightforward.
