In the highly anticipated first ODI of the three-match series between India and Australia, cricket fans were taken aback by the absence of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc from the Australian lineup. IND vs AUS 1st ODI is set to unfold at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday, September 22.
IND vs AUS 1st ODI: Why is Glenn Maxwell not playing?
Glenn Maxwell, the dynamic all-rounder, was sidelined from the first ODI due to a minor aggravation to his left ankle. This setback occurred during the team’s training session in Durban ahead of the T20I series against South Africa. Maxwell’s absence is a significant blow to the Australian team, given his prowess as a multi-dimensional player, capable of impacting both with the bat and on the field.
“I am feeling pretty good, my wrist is all healed now. I am hoping to play all three games. Starc won’t be playing tomorrow, hope he will be well bowled later in the series, same with Maxwell. We are trying to have a balance between getting a match time to everyone in the middle as we are going to the World Cup in a couple of weeks,” Australian captain Pat Cummins.
Australian captain Pat Cummins, having recovered from a wrist fracture sustained during the last Test match in the Ashes 2023, provided insights into the situation, disclosing the reasons behind their absence and shedding light on the team’s strategic approach.
Another notable absence was Mitchell Starc, the left-arm pacer renowned for his lethal bowling. Starc, who played a crucial role in Australia’s 2-1 ODI series victory against India in March, was ruled out due to “groin soreness” he experienced upon his return from the Ashes tour. Additionally, he had also suffered a shoulder injury during the Ashes 2023 tour, further necessitating his absence from this critical encounter.
In light of Maxwell and Starc’s absence, Australian captain Pat Cummins revealed their strategy of playing with four frontline bowlers for the first ODI. Cummins emphasized the importance of balance and match time for all players, highlighting their preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
Adam Zampa, the spinner, was highlighted as a crucial component of their strategy for the death overs. Zampa’s effectiveness in maintaining the run rate and securing crucial wickets during the death overs made him a key asset in this strategic approach.
This opening ODI served as an opportunity for Australia to adapt to Indian conditions and fine-tune their team combination, especially in the absence of key players. It was a chance for the team to test their depth and showcase their flexibility and resilience against a formidable Indian team.
