International cricket council has once again decided to delay the decision regarding the T20 World Cup which is to be held in Australia during the October-November window. The final decision regarding the staging of the tournament has been in jeopardy ever since lockdown was imposed around the world due to coronavirus pandemic.
ICC denies reports of postponing the World Cup
Earlier there were reports that the ICC has decided to postpone the T20 world cup to next year. But in their latest press release, they have strongly denied that reports. The governing body also cleared that they are still looking for the situation to get better so as to stage the mega event as per the earlier schedule.
The fact that the lockdown restrictions have been lifted to a great extend in Australia where the Men’s T20 World cup is to be held between October 18 and November 15 has come in as a great relief for the ICC. Whereas contrastingly Cricket Australia is in favour of the tournament being postponed to next year considering the current health crisis.
ICC delays decision until July
Cricket’s highest governing body is looking at all possible ways to stage the mega event as it would bring in huge revenue to the board. They have decided to wait for some more time for the situation to get better before taking a call on the fate of the tournament. The apex body of the game has also deferred its decision on the 2021 Women’s World Cup. As of now, it is decided that the decision regarding these mega-events will be taken in July. The decision was made after the meeting of the ICC board took place over a conference call on Wednesday afternoon.
“We will continue to assess and evaluate the rapidly changing public health situation caused by COVID-19 working with key stakeholders including governments to explore how the events can be staged to protect the health and safety of everyone involved,” a member of the ICC governing body said.
ICC waiting to take the right decision
The Board members cleared that the health of all those involved is the first priority and they are waiting for the right time to make the best possible decision.
ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said:
“The situation surrounding the global pandemic is evolving rapidly and we want to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to make the right decision for the whole sport.
“The health and well-being of everyone involved is our priority and other considerations fall out from that.
“We will only get one chance to make this decision and it needs to be the right one and as such we will continue to consult with our Members, broadcasters, partners, governments and players and to ensure that we make a well informed decision.”
