Graham Thorpe, the former England cricket legend, tragically took his own life at the age of 55, his wife Amanda Thorpe has revealed. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced his passing on August 5, but details of his struggle with mental health were only recently disclosed by his family.
Amanda Thorpe, in a heartfelt interview, shared that her husband had been battling severe depression and anxiety for years. Despite their efforts and his love for his family, which included their two daughters, Kitty (22) and Emma (19), Graham felt that he could not recover. His condition had worsened over time, leading him to believe that his family would be better off without him.
Mrs Thorpe told The Times: “Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.”
Amanda explained that Graham had attempted to take his life in May 2022, which resulted in an extended stay in intensive care. Unfortunately, despite glimpses of hope and various treatments, his mental health continued to decline.
Thorpe was remembered over the weekend in Farnham, where a minute’s silence was held before a cricket match between Farnham Cricket Club and Chipstead Cricket Club. Similar tributes were observed at the Oval, Lord’s, and in Cardiff.
In her emotional revelation, Amanda noted that while Graham was known for his mental toughness on the cricket field, his battle with mental illness was a reminder that it can affect anyone, regardless of their outward strength or physical health. The family is now considering establishing a foundation in his name to raise awareness about mental health.
Graham Thorpe was a celebrated cricketer, earning 100 Test caps for England. His passing has deeply impacted the cricket community, with many paying tribute to his contributions both on and off the field.
