India is touted as ODI World Cup 2023 favourites for home-ground advantage and formidable combination of talent.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, former England captain and 2019 World Cup-winning skipper, Eoin Morgan, has weighed in with his predictions.
Eoin Morgan predicts ODI World Cup 2023 Winner
In a recent statement, Eoin Morgan expressed his belief that the Indian cricket team, led by Rohit Sharma, holds a significant advantage as the tournament unfolds on their home soil. Morgan’s foresight is rooted in historical patterns, where home teams have often emerged victorious, as witnessed in previous editions.
Drawing from his own experience of captaining England to World Cup glory in 2019, Morgan highlighted India as the frontrunners due to their formidable combination of talent and home-ground advantage. Acknowledging the history of teams triumphing on their own turf, including India’s victory in 2011 and England’s triumph in 2019, Morgan’s projection aligns with the trend.
While England remains a strong contender in Morgan’s estimation, he places them as his second favorite after India. His assessment is underlined by the recognition that knowing the conditions of the host nation can significantly impact a team’s performance.
“England are a very good team. I will rate them second favorites after India but only just. India on home soil is the favorite and are a very good team,” stated Morgan.
He emphasized that the success of past World Cups has often aligned with the home team’s prowess, a narrative that could potentially repeat in the 2023 edition.
The inaugural match of the tournament will witness the defending champions, England, face off against New Zealand, their opponents in the 2019 final, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 5. Meanwhile, India’s first match will see them go head-to-head against Australia, a five-time World Cup-winning team, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 8.
Looking ahead to the final stages of the tournament, Morgan anticipates a diverse lineup, including Australia and Babar Azam-led Pakistan, to secure their spots in the final four. He credits their depth and versatility as key attributes that could propel them toward the latter stages of the competition.
Who won the men’s ODI World Cup?
England won last edition of ODI World Cup (2019), their first-ever World Cup win. In 2015, Australia seized the championship in their homeland. In 2011, India emerged victorious on home soil, etching their name in cricket history as they clinched the World Cup title.
