Stokes to Miss the Match at Lord’s
Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the England squad for the second Test match at Lord’s against India. England selectors have also decided to drop Dawid Malan due to his inconsistent form in the past matches.
They have called uncapped batsman Ollie Pope, who is currently playing for England Lions against India A at Worcester in place of Malan for the next match slated to kick start on Thursday.
The 20-year Pope has scored 684 runs at an average of 85.50 in the County Championship Division One and he is also the second-highest Test runs scorer of the tournament.
Chris Woakes Gets a Comeback
All-rounder Chris Woakes has been called to replace Ben Stokes who will be facing a court hearing this week in Bristol.
“Oli Pope has started his first-class career on a promising note. He has crossed the 1000-run mark in just 15 matches. The selection panel has decided to give him a chance based on his previous performances and his character. We believe he is well-suited for the international cricket,” said Ed Smith, the National Selector.
“Ben Stokes is not available, so we have called Chris Woakes with some practice and matches under his belt who has now also recovered from injury.”
Trevor Bayliss Urges the Players not be Distracted
Head Coach Trevor Bayliss has urged his team not be disappointed and distracted.
“It will be very interesting to note who can step up and take the lead in his absence,” he said.
“Two or three guys need to step and do the extra yards. That will be the changing factor for the next match,” he added.
Ben Stokes played a crucial role in the last match at Edgbaston as he returned with the figures of 4 for 40 in the last match which included a match-turning wicket of Indian skipper Virat Kohli. But England will be taking on India this time sans Ben Stokes as he stands trial at Bristol Crown Court with affray.
