India’s greatest ever sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar enjoys a crazy fan base that is second to no one. Whenever he bats, an entire nation of more than 1 billion population sits in their homes, glued to their television. To deny an incredible milestone of such a great player is bound to bring in a lot of criticisms. In one of his latest interviews, Former England fast bowler claims that he received death threats after denying Tendulkar his 100th century.
Bresnan denied Tendulkar his milestone
Former English pacer Tim Bresnan in his latest podcast with Yorkshire revealed that he received death threats after denying Tendulkar his 100th international hundred. When Bresnan came into bowl his next spell, Tendulkar was batting on 91. Then a delivery from Bresnan clipped him on the pads. Following a huge appeal from the English team, the umpire Tucker raised his fingers, even though the ball seemed to be missing the leg stump. Even though it was not out since the BCCI was not in favour of the DRS (Decision Review System) back then, India and Tendulkar did not have the option to refer the decision, and hence he had to walk back to the pavilion.
“He was on 99 international hundreds and there were no referrals in that series because the BCCI didn’t like it,” said Bresnan while speaking on the Yorkshire Cricket: Covers Off podcast.
“It was at The Oval in the last Test of the series. This ball, it was probably missing leg anyway, and umpire (Tucker), Aussie lad, shot him out. He was on 80-odd as well (91), definitely going to get it (his century). We win the series and go to number one in the world” he added.
Bowler and Umpire received death threats
This wrong move by the umpire was bound to ignite a huge crowd. And as expected, Bresnan and Umpire Tucker received death threats. The abuse and threats were so much that Tucker had to ask for police protection for his safety.
“We both got death threats, me and this umpire, we got death threats for ages after,” Bresnan went on. “I got them on Twitter and he (Tucker) had people writing to him to his home address and stuff, getting proper death threats going, ‘How dare you give him out? It was missing leg.’ I caught up with him a few months later and he was like, ‘Mate, I’ve had to get a security guard and stuff.’ He had police protection around his gaff in Australia.”
Tendulkar’s wait ends
Sachin Tendulkar had to wait for quite a long time to acquire that milestone. He in between won the ICC World Cup but played the entire tournament without getting to a ton. He finally acquired the milestone against Bangladesh. Till now, that record seems to be unbreakable.
