ENG vs IND: Once again India has started to deal with some casualties on an overseas tour. India’s Test contingent is currently in England for the five-match Test series starting from August 4. However, before even the start of the Test matches, the trio of Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan have been ruled out of the entire tour due to their respective injury issues.

India captain Virat Kohli felt some stiffness on his back earlier this week due to which he also missed the three-day practice match. Also, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane had complained of mild swelling around his left upper hamstring. While considering these major injury setbacks, the BCCI is now making plans to fly the likes of Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav and Jayant Yadav to England, according to an Indian Express report. Incidentally, both Prithvi and Suryakumar are currently present in Sri Lanka for the limited-overs series that ends on 29 July while Jayant is in India.

Shaw has been called up as the back-up opener while Suryakumar Yadav could be included in the India Test team as a middle-order batsman if Rahane’s hamstring injury worsens. On the other hand, Jayant Yadav who last played a Test match in 2017 is being considered as a like-for-like replacement for Washington Sundar.

India have already won the ODI series against Sri Lanka and now the T20I matches are scheduled on 25, 27 and 29 July. It is still not clear as to when will Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav and Jayant leave as both Sri Lanka and India are on the red list with regards to the Covid-19 travel restrictions in England. Earlier, the BCCI and selectors reportedly turned down Virat Kohli and team management’s request to send Prithvi Shaw as they felt with openers like Mayank Agarwal and Abhimanyu Easwaran already present in England, there was no need for the Mumbai batsman. Wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has also joined the Indian Test team in Durham after recovering from Covid-19.
