It is known that Shubman Gill will not be part of the upcoming England series starting on August 4th. India have named a 20 member squad for the test series and with Shubman Gill ruled out, BCCI are looking to include Prithvi Shaw as the replacement option for Shubman Gill.
Kapil Dev not in favor of a replacement
The former world cup winning captain Kapil Dev in his latest interview said that naming a replacement for Shubman Gill might be an insult to the players who are already in the squad.
“I don’t think there is any need for it. There should be some respect for the selectors too. They have picked a team and I’m sure it wouldn’t have happened without their (Shastri and Kohli) consultation,” Kapil Dev said.

It does make sense because of the fact that India already have Mayank Agarwal in the squad who is a regular opener and KL Rahul who used to open as well. As per reports, BCCI might call Prithvi Shaw immediately after the Sri Lankan tour as Shubman Gill’s replacement. Here’s what Kapil Dev had to say about it.
I mean, you have two such big opening batsmen in KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Do you really need a third option? I don’t think it’s right. I’m not convinced with this theory. The team that they’ve picked already has openers so I think they should be the ones to play. Otherwise, it’s insulting for the players who are already in the team
An opening pair that looked promising
India struggled to get the right opening combination in the longer format of the game for quite a long period of time. Just when Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started looking promising, an unfortunate injury to Shubman Gill has broken that successful opening pair for India.
