ENG vs AUS: Why is Mark Wood Not Playing England vs Australia Ashes 2023 2nd Test?

In the England playing 11 for the ENG vs AUS Ashes 2023 2nd Test, right-arm pace bowler Mark Wood misses out on a spot. However, England captain Ben Stokes revealed that he was very much eager to play Wood in this second Test match, however, the speedster is yet to gain complete match fitness and thus, the team management is hoping that he makes a comeback in the Leeds Test match scheduled to begin from 6 July, 2023. Mark Wood, a skilled cricketer from England, has proudly donned the national colors in a remarkable 28 Test matches. His exceptional talent on the field has rewarded him with an impressive tally of 90 wickets, displaying an average of 30.89. Notably, he has achieved the coveted feat of securing three five-wicket hauls throughout his career.

However, England have gone ahead with a total of five fast bowlers in their playing XI, skipper Ben Stokes, Josh Tongue, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson. Joe Root is the only spin bowling option for the hosts.

“We wanted to play Mark Wood. We felt that he could definitely start the game but with conversations, we felt the extra week with build-up and getting his loads up would give him a better chance and an opportunity to play a full part from Leeds onwards. And we brought Tonguey into the team as a like-for-like with Woody. We turned up here at Lord’s and saw there was quite a lot of grass on the wicket, a bit of green,” said England captain Ben Stokes.
