In a crucial news update, hosts England are not playing speedster Mark Wood in the first Test match against Australia part of Ashes 2023 scheduled to take place at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. England are coming into this all-important five-match Test series on the back of a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Ireland at home in a one-off Test match. On the other hand, England have not lost a single Ashes series at home against Australia in the last 22 years.
ENG vs AUS: Why is Mark Wood Not Playing England vs Australia Ashes 2023 1st Test?
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recently announced their confirmed ENG Playing XI for the opening ENG vs AUS Match starting from Friday where it was revealed that fast bowler Mark Wood will be warming the bench. Incidentally, the right-arm tearaway pace bowler played his last Test match for England against Pakistan in December 2022 and has also struggled with multiple injury issues in the past especially in the longest format of the game. Wood has represented England in 28 Test matches having picked up as many as 90 wickets at an average of 30.89 that includes 3 five-wicket hauls. He also sat out during the one-off Test match against Ireland at the Lord’s. However, England have gone ahead with the trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson as their three frontline fast bowlers in the side for this first Test against Australia.
