England have kept themselves alive in the Ashes 2023 with an excellent 3-wicket victory over Australia in the third Test match being played at the Headingley in Leeds. After having lost the first two Test matches, this is a phenomenal comeback from the Ben Stokes-led team. There were many exceptional performances throughout the Test from both England and Australia players where Mitchell Marsh scored a lovely century and Ben Stokes also smacked 80 runs in the first innings. However, it was right-arm fast bowler Mark Wood who bowled extremely well in the Headingley Test match with tearaway pace to set up England’s remarkable victory. He ended up taking as many as 7 wickets in the Test and also provided some useful runs with the bat in both the innings. Thus, Wood was named as the Man of the Match award winner in the ENG vs AUS Ashes 2023 3rd Test.
After having lost the toss and being asked to bat first, Australia did not had the best of starts on Day 1 of the third Test match as they ended up losing as many as four wickets in the opening session. However, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh then batted superbly well on his comeback in Test cricket as he took the attack against the England bowlers and added a crucial partnership of 155 runs alongside Travis Head. Marsh went on to score a brilliant innings of 118 runs that included 17 fours and 4 sixes. But with his wicket just at the stroke of Tea break, Australia suffered a huge batting collapse and they got bowled out for 263 runs in the first innings. For England, speedster Mark Wood bowled amazingly well and picked up a stunning five-wicket haul.
In reply, England never really got any momentum throughout their innings as they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Many of the batters got starts but they failed to convert them. England captain Ben Stokes led his team from the front having smashed a blazing knock of 80 runs that helped them to bring down the deficit to just 26 runs. England eventually got bowled out for 237 runs with the Aussie skipper Pat Cummins taking as many as six wickets.
In the second innings, Australia’s top order again got dismissed cheaply as Steve Smith failed to contribute much with the bat in both the innings of his 100th Test match. Also, England’s veteran pacer Stuart Broad dismissed David Warner for the 17th time in Test cricket. Usman Khawaja scored 43 runs but failed to convert it into a big innings. England’s pacers took great advantage of the overcast conditions on Day 3. Travis Head played a wonderful counter-attacking innings of 77 runs that eventually helped Australia to finish with a lead of 250 runs. For England, both Chris Woakes and Broad picked up three wickets each.
England started their fourth innings run-chase in a positive manner with an opening partnership of 42 runs. However, they lost their way in the middle having suffered vital blows at regular intervals. On Day 4, Harry Brook scored an important half-century and stitched an impressive partnership of 59 runs with Chris Woakes. Towards the end, Woakes smashed an unbeaten 32 runs as England brought up a famous win by 3 wickets.
