T20 World Cup 2021 in Sri Lanka?

It was earlier reported that the International Cricket Council has given the time till June 28 to decide abut staging the T20 World Cup. Now it has come to notice that BCCI is mulling to shift T20 World Cup to Sri Lanka due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. The pitches will be used for the Indian Premier League and it is expected that the pitch will get tired and will not be suitable for the showpiece event. The BCCI source was pro-active in his interview to ANI.

“See, there is no denying the fact that BCCI and ECB (Emirates Cricket Board) officials have been having discussions on taking the showpiece event (T20 WC) to UAE with an eye on the COVID-19 situation in India. But what also needs to be kept in mind here is that hosting the IPL would mean quite a few games, not to forget other tournaments or matches that might be held in some of the venues and tired wickets by the time of the World Cup,” a BCCI source told ANI.

Sri Lanka

“Keeping the playing conditions in mind, there have been some talks with SLC officials and just basic discussions, to be honest. Too early to get into the details, but we still have some time before we need to get back to the ICC to inform them on the situation as the BCCI will continue to have the hosting rights even if it is played outside India,” the source added.

BCCI and ICC in Jeopardy to host T20 World Cup

IPL 2021, which was postponed, in the beginning of the May, was rescheduled to a later date in the month of September at UAE. Now, the things are getting twisted, for where the T20 World Cup will take place, just after the remaining of the IPL is concluded. India is looking towards a possibility to conduct the World Cup at Sri Lanka, which has more venues. Also, the ICC has to be handed over the stadiums 15 days before the start of the tournament and in that case, stadiums in UAE, won’t be able to do that, as IPL will be happening. The stadiums are going to conduct a lot of matches in next few months; PSL, IPL, bilateral series. Oman, was also been looked, as a contention, to host the World Cup, but now Sri Lanka looks to be the ideal option, as the ICC can be handed over the stadium in their timeline.
