If you have to name the most unsuccessful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League, it would be Delhi Daredevils or Delhi Capitals. Even though many great players have donned their jersey, they have never been able to produce notable results on the field. The fact is that they remain the only team yet not to reach the IPL finals even for once. To pick an all-time eleven from such a team is a task in itself, but famous cricket commentator and analyst Aakash Chopra have taken forward this tedious task.
Sehwag to captain Aakash Chopra’s Delhi XI
Many greats of the game including AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, David Warner, Mahela Jayawardene, etc have played for Delhi across various season’s but if there was one name that was always synonymous with Delhi, it has to that of ‘Multan Ka Sultan’ Virender Sehwag.
For the opening slot, Chopra named the dashing Delhi duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir leaving out the IPL legend David Warner. Even though both of them have captained the Delhi side Chopra claimed that the side tasted much success under Sehwag and hence named him as the captain of the illustrious side.
Aakash Chopra picks an explosive middle-order
Delhi is a team that has over the seasons and has had the luxury of having many of the decorated middle-order batsmen in the world. From that illustrious list, he picked modern-day legend AB de Villiers for the number three spot. Before his much famous stint with RCB, ABD had spent his initial three years of the IPL with Delhi Daredevils.
He followed up the squad with the young Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant at numbers 4 and 5 respectively. Shreyas, who is also the captain of the Delhi capitals has been a consistent performer for them ever since he joined the Delhi based side. So is the case with young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who had been taking the bowlers all over the park for the last few seasons.
To finish up his batting lineup he named Proteas duo of JP Duminy and Chris Morris for the finishing role leaving behind probably two of the world’s best explosive batsmen, Kevin Pietersen and Andre Russell.
No place for Zaheer Khan in Aakash Chopra’s Delhi XI
Surprisingly Aakash Chopra decided to leave out former Delhi Daredevil’s captain and one of their leading bowler Zaheer Khan from the line-up. Instead, he named the Delhi born veteran Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes to lead the pace attack. Apart from Zaheer Khan, young Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada was a notable exclusion from the squad. He was the leader of their pace attack for the past few years.
To conclude the eleven, he went with the veteran leg spinner Amit Mishra and Shahbaz Nadeem to fill up his spin attack.
