Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra chose the best pace bowler among Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mitchell Starc to bowl the super over. In the latest video on his YouTube channel, Chopra explained why he would choose Jasprit Bumrah over the legend Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Starc to bowl a super over.
Aakash Chopra picked Bumrah over Malinga and Starc
Chopra started the video choosing the best spinner among Sunil Narine and Rashid Khan to bowl a super over. He chose the Afghan leggie Rashid Khan instead of Sunil Narine who is regarded as the best T20 spinner by many. Chopra talked about Sunil Narine’s maiden over while bowling in the super over. But he added that that the pitch was turning square which aided the bowler. He also said that Rashid is a unique bowler with more skills to bowl in difficult conditions.
Rashid Khan is a unique player. If the ball is turning and it is a difficult pitch, I would go with him. I would pick him above Narine.
Upon the question, if any team would prefer bowling with a spinner in a super over in front of the premier batsmen like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or heavy hitters like Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell, Chopra preferred a pacer bowler.
But will you give the ball to him in all scenarios, say if you have Kohli, Rohit, Pollard or Russell in front, would you go for a spinner. No team gives the 20th over to a spinner, so why would you give the Super Over to him. I won’t go with him either.
Explained Aakash Chopra. Talking about the three pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, and Mitchell Starc, Chopra added that Malinga is still a great bowler and in his earlier days it would be tough to pick anyone above him. However, at the moment, he could not be picked ahead of Starc and Bumrah.
Chopra also praised the Starc’s ability to bowl yorkers at will and take wickets while stomping the flow of runs. While talking about Bumrah and Starc, Aakash Chopra added that is difficult to choose one between both so the Australian would go with Starc and Indians would go with Bumrah.
Choosing between Starc and Bumrah is a very tough call. If you are Australian you will go with Starc, if you are Indian you will go with Bumrah.
Praising the Indian speedster, Aakash Chopra remembered Bumrah’s Super Over against Gujarat Lions where Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith could not get going against him.
Jasprit Bumrah, I remember a Super Over he had bowled against Gujarat Lions where they had Brendon McCullum and I think Dwayne Smith, one of the West Indian batsmen and they couldn’t touch the ball with the bat. In between he bowled a no ball as well, despite that he was not hit for runs.
Aakash Chopra concluded.
