Chris Gayle’s century in the inaugural match of World T20 2007
‘The Universe Boss’ wasn’t actually the force we all are aware of now. Yes, he always had the muscle to let his bat do the talking, but the tag of ‘Universe Boss’ didn’t come his way at that time.
It was the opening match of the inaugural World T20 in 2007 where West Indies were locking horns against the hosts, South Africa, at Johannesburg. The match will always be remembered for Chris Gayle’s magnificent 117 off 57 deliveries which included 7 fours and 10 mighty sixes which also made him the first-ever centurion in T20Is. His innings was outrageous at that point of time but wasn’t enough to take his team past the finishing line.
Relive the exhilarating knock here;
Joe Root’s stunning 83 in a record chase
It was the 2016 edition of World T20 and the venue was the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing an impossible target of 230 set by the Proteas, Joe Root came completely out of his zone to help his team record a memorable run chase.
Joe Root isn’t someone who dash the ball right from the word ‘Go’, but the amount of skills he displayed in that game was nothing short of a miracle. His 83 off 44 deliveries included 6 fours and 4 mighty lofts out of the park which eventually helped England chase down a daunting total with 2 wickets and 2 balls to spare.
Here’s a glimpse of that outrageous knock;
Hardik Pandya defending 11 runs in the final over against Bangladesh
Hardik Pandya was an unknown prodigy then, but MS Dhoni’s gamble to hand him the last over of a must-win clash against Bangladesh in 2016 World T20 paid dividends.
Bangladesh were chasing a modest total of 146 runs in a Super 10 game against India in Bangalore. India were under immense pressure in a do-or-die scenario, Pandya’s first three balls of the penultimate over went for 9 runs which left Bangladesh with only two runs to get from the last three deliveries.
What came next was nothing but a miracle. Bangladesh in expectation of a ‘Glory’ shot lost two wickets in two balls and the rest was done by MS Dhoni who affected a run-out on the final ball of the innings. It was nothing but a dramatic win for India.
