Ability to lead from the front!
Dhoni surprised one and all once again to turn up with the bat in the 2011 ODI World Cup final. It was a huge gamble by him to promote himself in the batting order ahead of an in-form Yuvraj Singh, and defy the pre-match batting roles, for had he failed it would have tarnished his image forever.
But he held firm in the storm and guided India to the win over neighbour Sri Lanka. That six on Nuwan Kulasekara, followed by the swivel of the bat in the air, made that moment iconic and send him into immortality zones.
Mental toughness!
There’s not much to separate the “Good” and “Best if the talent alone is the parameter, but what separates, the best from the good is the mental toughness. That highly obscure, and gold dust like aspect of an athlete, or for any human in any aspect of life. This mind, this thing inside our skull, and it’s the toughness, is what that defines everyone.
Take for example the case of Marcus Trescothick, and Johnathan Trott. The former was hailed as one of the best left-handed Batsman for England when he was in his prime, while Trott was also seen as a long-term English talent, but the duo couldn’t cope with the demand of International cricket.
Self-Confidence!
You can’t be as successful as Dhoni was if you don’t have the confidence in your abilities, and the Ranchi superstar, despite an uncanny and out-of-the-box batting technique, trusted his abilities. Whatever decision he took, both on and off the field, he oozed confidence.
