Virat Kohli has led team India to various milestones in test cricket including a test series victory in Australia. His leadership has helped in India’s dominance in bilateral series in ODI’s and T20’s, but at the same time he has failed in high pressure games especially in knockouts in ICC tournaments. With that being said, here we look at 5 possible captains for team India after Virat Kohli steps down.
5. Jasprit Bumrah
This may come in as a surprise for a few, but the fact is that despite Virat, he is the only person whose place in the Indian team is cemented for atleast 3 years from now across all formats. He do not have any past experience of leading any team, but the way he consolidated Quinton De Kock after a simple drop catch in IPL 2019 final clearly shows how good a man manager he is. What works in Bumrah’s favour is that he is just 26 years old now and is already the most important player for team India after Virat Kohli across all formats. Indian management have long history of handing over the captaincy to the most important player in the team.
4. Manish Pandey
Anybody who follows domestic cricket in India wouldn’t disagree with this opinion. Manish‘s captaincy has been one of the main reason for the rise of Karnataka in domestic circuit. He has been splendid in handling high profile players in Karnataka squad including the likes of KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Krishnappa Gowtham etc. But what works against Manish is his place in the Indian squad, he has been warming the bench for so long now. If he can cement his place in the Indian squad for long, then the captaincy baton will come to him with ease in future.
3. KL Rahul
Is there anything that KL Rahul cannot do? He is India’s go to man in limited overs cricket when any crisis comes up. Over the years Rahul has matured over as a player and as a person. He also took up the charge of captaincy in one of the ODI’s against New Zealand when the situation demanded so. Even though it was a small stint, he looked promising for taking over the captaincy in future. With Kings XI Punjab handing over the captaincy baton to him, it is a big opportunity for him to showcase his worth as a captain. If he can lead the most unsuccessful team such a Kings XI to a maiden title win, then things will look positive in future for Rahul.
