Australia vs England: Australia defeated England by 72 runs in the 2nd ODI held in Sydney. With this victory, they clinched the 3-match ODI series 2-0. Now both sides will move to the iconic MCG for the 3rd and final ODI. With the series already decided, both sides are expected to make some significant changes to their playing XIs. Many of the players who were benched for the last two ODIs may get the nod. Let’s see what possible changes Australia is likely to make for this fixture.
1. Pat Cummins to return, Rest for Mitchell Starc
One sure change expected for the 3rd ODI is the presence of Australian captain Pat Cummins. He was rested for the 2nd ODI to manage his workload. His fellow fast bowler, Josh Hazlewood captained the side on his behalf in the last match. With the series already decided, Aussies may give rest to their premium fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who played both the 1st and 2nd ODIs. Pat Cummins may replace him in the eleven and will lead the side for the 3rd ODI.
2. Cameron Green to replace David Warner
With the series already decided, Australia could try out multiple options to replace Aaron Finch in the opening slot. As of now, Travis Head is doing that role. But his lack of consistency is of great concern going ahead for the 2023 ODI World Cup. So this is a perfect opportunity for Aussies to try out someone like Cameron Green, who has already opened alongside Warner in the T20Is. So Warner could be rested for this dead rubber and Green could be given a chance at the opening slot.
3. Sean Abbot to replace Stoinis
Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis might get rested for the 3rd ODI. He is very injury prone and is key to Australia’s roadmap for the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2023. Now with the series already decided, Australia may not risk him by playing him in a dead rubber. Sean Abbot, who is yet to get a game in this series may replace him in the eleven for the 3rd ODI.
