At the tender age of 16, Rayudu embarked on his first-class career with the Hyderabad cricket team in 2002. He made an immediate impact during the 2002-03 Ranji Trophy, becoming the youngest player in the history of the tournament to score a double century and a century in the same match. Rayudu’s remarkable innings of 210 and 159 not out against Andhra propelled him to a total of 698 runs for the season, finishing third on the leading run-scorers list with an impressive average of 69.80.
Recognizing his potential, Rayudu was entrusted with the responsibility of captaining the India Under-19 team at the 2004 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. Although India reached the semi-finals, Rayudu played a crucial role in the team’s success. In a series against England, his maiden Under-19 assignment, Rayudu opened the batting and emerged as the highest run-getter with 291 runs from 3 innings, contributing significantly to India’s clean sweep of the series.

Rayudu’s consistent performances and impressive track record earned him a call-up to the Indian national team. He made his international debut in July 2013 during an One Day International against Zimbabwe. Selected as part of a second-string Indian squad, Rayudu played a vital role in securing victory for India. He scored 63 runs, becoming the 12th Indian batsman to achieve a half-century on ODI debut. Despite his early success, Rayudu found himself in and out of the national team, primarily serving as a reserve batsman during various ODI series.
In the lead-up to the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Rayudu’s average of 19.33 in the tri-series against Australia and England earned him a spot in India’s 15-member squad. However, he did not get an opportunity to feature in any game during the tournament, as the team preferred to stick with the winning combination until the semi-final against Australia. Rayudu made his mark in the subsequent tour of Zimbabwe, scoring an unbeaten 124 in the first ODI and winning the Man of the Match award. Unfortunately, his promising run was cut short due to an injury that ruled him out of the rest of the tour.
Despite some impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and a consistent run in the national team, Rayudu faced disappointment when he was not included in the 2019 World Cup squad. The selectors opted for Vijay Shankar, whom they defined as a “3-D player,” instead. This decision deeply hurt Rayudu, leading him to announce his retirement from international cricket.

Rayudu’s international T20 career was relatively short-lived. Although he was initially picked as a replacement player for the injured Manoj Tiwary for the T20I series against England in 2012, he did not get a chance to feature in the playing eleven. It was not until two years later, on September 7, 2014, that Rayudu finally made his T20I debut against England. He went on to play only six T20Is, scoring 42 runs, with his last match coming against South Africa on October 5, 2015.
