Alex Hales, a promising young cricketer, made headlines at the age of 16 during the Cricket Idol T20 tournament in 2005. In a remarkable display of batting prowess, Hales smashed an astonishing 52 runs off a single over at Lord’s. The over included three no-balls, eight sixes, and one four, leaving spectators in awe of his talent. While some compared him to the renowned Kevin Pietersen, others found it ironic that he was selected as a fast bowler in the competition.

Born in Hillingdon, Middlesex, Hales began his cricket journey by representing Buckinghamshire in 2006. His exceptional skills caught the attention of Nottinghamshire, and he made his first-class debut for them in 2008. Even before his debut, Hales displayed immense potential by scoring a century in only his second appearance for Nottinghamshire in 2007. He continued to impress in 2008, representing the England Under-19s in youth Test matches and one-dayers, where he showcased his remarkable batting average of 50 in Tests and 30 in one-day matches. Such outstanding performances led to Hales’ inclusion in England’s Performance Programme squad in the winter of 2009-10.

Hales’ domestic success continued, and he received a surprise call-up to England’s Twenty20 squad in 2011. Unfortunately, his debut against India at Old Trafford ended in disappointment as he was dismissed without scoring any runs. However, he made amends in his fifth T20I match, becoming the first cricketer in T20I history to be dismissed on 99, showcasing his potential once again.

Despite occasional setbacks, Hales maintained his consistency in England’s T20 squad. In the 2014 World T20, he played a memorable innings, hammering the Sri Lankan bowlers to register his maiden century for England. This remarkable feat also marked the first century by an English batsman in T20Is. Impressed by his T20 performances, England drafted him into the ODI squad, but his debut against India and subsequent series against Sri Lanka didn’t meet expectations. Nevertheless, England persisted with Hales, naming him in the 2015 World Cup squad, although he was unable to secure a regular opening batting position due to the preference for Ian Bell and Moeen Ali.

Following England’s disappointing World Cup campaign, the team underwent significant changes, with Eoin Morgan leading a revamped ODI unit. Hales was given the freedom to play aggressively at the top of the order, contributing significantly to England’s ODI success. His most notable achievement to date came in 2016 when he scored a mammoth 171 runs against Pakistan at Trent Bridge, surpassing a 23-year-old record held by Robin Smith for the highest individual score by an Englishman. However, Hales’ record stood for only 17 months, as his opening partner, Jason Roy, outshone him with a blistering 180 against Australia.

Despite his limited success in the Test format, Hales continued to excel for his domestic team, Nottinghamshire, during his 11-Test run for England. He played a pivotal role in Nottinghamshire’s triumphs in both the Royal London Cup and the T20 Blast. Additionally, Hales represented the Mumbai team in the 2018 Indian T20 League, gaining valuable experience in the competitive Indian cricketing landscape.

Hales became an integral part of England’s limited-overs side, particularly in the T20 format. However, the emergence of Jonny Bairstow as a destructive opener in white-ball cricket led to Hales losing his spot at the top of the order and being relegated to number 3.
