A spectacular bowling spell of 2 for 14 runs in four overs from Rahul Chahar and a composed 71-run innings from Suryakumar Yadav took Mumbai Indians in the finals of IPL 2019 while Chennai Super Kings now have to face the winner of DC vs SRH to win a berth in the IPL season 12 finals.

Mumbai restrict CSK to 131 runs

Batting hasn’t been Chennai’s strength this season and Dhoni has trusted his bowlers to defend small totals. But even then 131 wasn’t enough to challenge Mumbai. CSK had a bad start as their top three batsmen were back in the hunt in the first six overs and the franchise had slipped to three down for 32 runs.

Ambati Rayudu then revived CSK’s inning by adding 33 runs for the fourth wicket with Murali Vijay (26 off 26 balls) but a huge turner from Chahar outfoxed Vijay in the 13th over to break this partnership.

MS Dhoni then delivered the finishing punches by scoring 37 off 29 balls and lifted CSK to 131 after 20 overs. Rayudu meanwhile remained unbeaten on 42 off 37 balls.

Mumbai openers perish early in a small chase

In response, Mumbai lost skipper Rohit Sharma on the very second ball of the innings as Deepak Chahar trapped him in front of the wickets. Quinton de Kock then failed to hit Harbhajan Singh inside out in the fourth over and offered a catch to du Plessis at long-off as Mumbai tottered at two down for 21 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav guides Mumbai to finals

With the team in trouble, Suryakumar Yadav upped the ante and played match-winning innings. He added 80 runs for the third wicket with Ishan Kishan (28 off 31 balls) to bring Mumbai back on track.

In the 14th over, Imran Tahir’s quicker one knocked out Kishan’s stumps and on the very next ball, Krunal sent back a dipping full-toss straight to the bowler.

Mumbai lost two quick wickets but Yadav kept his cool and anchored the chase. Hardik Pandya scored unbeaten 13 off 11 balls to take Mumbai home as Suryakumar Yadav remained not-out on 71 off 54 balls.
