Five years ago, Liverpool fans were almost ready to erupt into the party mode. They were thrashing teams after teams at Anfield and looked set to end their long wait for the Premier League trophy.
The only hurdle was Jose Mourinho, Anfield’s old nemesis, and his Chelsea team.
The story of that match is a part of Premer League folklore now. Of all people in the Liverpool squad, it was Steven Gerrard who made a fatal mistake and saw the big opportunity to win the league slipped by.
It’s almost five years now but a Liverpool-Chelsea match has become synonymous with that Gerrard’s slip. It’s a pity for a player of that caliber who deserved to win at least one Premier League medal.
Gerrard may not be there but Liverpool have one more opportunity to end the long league drought. As things stand, the Reds are top of the table, two points above Manchester City who have a game-in-hand.
That said, by the time this match kicks off, Liverpool may find themselves under more pressure to win this game. Pep Guardiola’s team will be in action against Crystal Palace before the game at Anfield, so could move to the top of the table.
While Chelsea may not be chasing the league glory this season, they still have a lot to play for. The Blues are looking to finish in the top-4, and secure a place in the Champions League for the next season.
The Blues could cause another upset for they are in a very good form heading into this match. Eden Hazard continues to show why he is one of the best players ever to grace Premier League, and he is confident of Chelsea’s chances at Anfield.
‘We don’t care about who can win the title, we’ll go there and try to win the game,’ Hazard told the BBC.
‘They are a fantastic team to watch, their manager is great. ‘They have some of the best players in the world. But we are Chelsea, we can beat anyone.’
