Nethra Kumanan: Olympics, Achievements, Biography

Nethra Kumanan’s journey into sailing began in 2009 when she attended a summer camp at the age of 12. Despite trying her hand at various sports like tennis, cycling, and basketball, it was sailing’s mental challenges that captivated her. A trained Bharatnatyam dancer, she embraced sailing wholeheartedly, even dropping out of school in 2014 to participate in the Asian Games.

“My school didn’t allow more than ten days off in a year. I had to travel to Korea for the Games. The decision was simple for me, and I don’t regret it,” Nethra recalled. Her decision paid off, as she steadily rose through the ranks, achieving significant milestones on the international stage.

While sailing remains relatively unknown in India, Nethra’s achievements are setting a path for future generations. Her journey from a schoolgirl fascinated by sailing to an Olympic contender is an inspiring story of perseverance and passion.

Olympics

In 2020, Nethra became the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics by winning a qualification event. Competing in the Laser Radial category, she secured her spot by leading the Mussanah Open Championship in Oman. This achievement was not just a personal milestone but a historic moment for Indian sailing.

Reflecting on her Tokyo experience, Nethra said, “Last time, the whole focus was on qualification. It was a huge milestone in such a challenging time.” Despite the challenges, she cherished the opportunity to meet Indian sports icons like Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh at the Opening Ceremony.

Nethra Kumanan is poised to prove her mettle at the Paris Olympics. She recently made history as the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for two Olympic Games, a testament to her dedication and talent in the sport.

In April 2024, Nethra secured her qualification for the Paris Olympics at the Last Chance Regatta event through the Emerging Nations Program (ENP). “The qualification is very exciting. I got the last possible slot, but it wasn’t an Asian slot; it was an international spot,” she shared. Although she felt she underperformed, her focus is now on excelling at the Games.

As she prepares for the Paris Olympics, Nethra Kumanan continues to brave the waves, representing India with pride and paving the way for more Indian sailors to follow.
