Chennai Super Kings failed to make it to the playoffs in the IPL 2024. It is a big thing for a franchise like CSK that has set some unparalleled standards of consistency in the league. The Yellow Army looked good throughout the season but the dip in the form of a few players alongside a couple of injuries to their key pacers towards the end halted the CSK’s bandwagon.
The IPL 2024 was a season of inconsistencies for the Chennai Super Kings. Barring Ruturaj Gaikwad, no other batter could stay consistent throughout the tournament. Furthermore, their bowling looked toothless in the absence of Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana.
Chennai Super Kings appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as their new skipper ahead of the IPL 2024 and it is highly unlikely that we will see MS Dhoni donning the gloves for the Chennai-based franchise in the IPL 2025. The franchise has a big auction coming up in the IPL 2025 as they will have to build the team from scratch this time around.
The IPL governing council has not made the rules clear for the mega auctions for the IPL 2025 yet. However, we are assuming that they are likely to franchise to retain five players (including two foreigners) just like the previous mega auction and there will also be one Right to Match (RTM) card.
Meanwhile, in this post, we will take a look at the five players CSK could retain for the IPL 2025.
1 – Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj is the future of the CSK. Hence, the franchise entrusted him to be the skipper of the franchise after MS Dhoni. The right-handed batter is also the bank of runs for the franchise. He has been the leading run-scorer for them in the last few seasons and in the IPL 2024, he once again finished as their best batter with 583 runs in 14 matches.
2 – Ravindra Jadeja
Jaddu is a rare commodity and he is one player who will be in super high demand if he goes to the auctions. The left-handed southpaw is a three-dimensional player with his left-arm spin bowling, handy batting in the lower-middle order, and world-class fielding. The superstar all-rounder had a disappointing season with the ball in the IPL 2024 but it won’t change anything. He is a senior pro in the CSK’s set-up and the franchise is likely to retain their prized asset.
3 – Matheesha Pathirana
The young Sri Lankan pacer has grown leaps and bounds in the last year and he was going great guns before getting injured in the IPL 2024. Pathirana picked up 13 wickets in just 6 games at a strike rate of 10.1. The death bowlers are always in high demand during the auctions and the Chennai-based franchise would not risk him going to the auctions as they might not get him back.
4 – Shivam Dube
With CSK, Shivam Dube has transformed himself into a hard-hitting middle-order batter who could rip apart any bowling attack during the middle phase. The left-handed batter is brutal against the spinners, making him an asset to have in your batting line-up. Shivam Dube has had a successful IPL 2024, scoring 396 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 162.29. Chennai Super Kings might contemplate retaining Shivam Dube or they could also use the RTM card for the left-handed southpaw in the auctions for the IPL 2025.
5 – MS Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings are synonymous with MS Dhoni. While many are thinking that the legendary skipper has played his last game for the franchise in the IPL 2024, with MS Dhoni, you never know. The captain cool might return for the one last time in the CSK jersey with his limited role to guide the team through the transition. He could take the role of the impact player in the IPL 2025, limiting his role further on the field.
