BCCI announced the squad for the upcoming South Africa tour on November 30th, comprising two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20s. The selection brings in some new faces while also welcoming back familiar ones. Despite high expectations, Rahane faced serious questions about his Test team return and ultimately missed out on a place in the squad.
Rahane, India’s leading run-scorer in the WTC final 2023, has the highest Test score of 89 in his last ten Test innings. He last scored a century against Australia in December 2020.
Rahane’s absence from the team aligns with the BCCI’s long-term strategy, as stated by Sourav Ganguly, the former BCCI President (2019-2022). Ganguly praised Rahane for his contribution to Indian Cricket but also suggested making way for emerging young talent eager for opportunities.
Looking at Rahane’s last ten Test innings, however, reveals inconsistency as a key factor in his exclusion. Two ducks in these innings indicate a dip in form, with Rahane only managing three half-centuries.

Why is Ajinkya Rahane not in India’s Test Squad?
The absence of Ajinkya Rahane has sparked thoughts among fans and experts alike. Despite a prominent career, his recent performances show a drop in form, with noticeable inconsistencies. The selectors, led by Agarkar, have opted to prioritize the current form over past milestones. Rahane’s exclusion, at 35 years old, aligns with the selectors’ vision to reward budding talents awaiting opportunities.
Having featured in 85 Tests, Rahane amassed 5077 runs at an average of 38.46 in 144 innings. With 12 centuries, 26 half-centuries, and an individual high of 188 runs, his contribution to the team is undeniable. While his middle-order experience and past success in South Africa might have influenced the selectors, the emergence of young talents has taken precedence.
