Australia has announced its extended squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023. The squad will be trimmed to 15 players before the World Cup, with the cutoff date for changes set for September 28, just seven days before the tournament kicks off on October 5.
Before the World Cup, the squad is scheduled to play five ODIs in South Africa in early September and three more against India in late September. This will provide Australia with ample opportunities to finalize their squad before the tournament.

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the 18-man squad, raising eyebrows among cricket enthusiasts. Labuschagne’s exclusion as an unselected batsman has caught many off guard. However, the squad features some unexpected inclusions, with potential debutants Tanveer Sangha and Aaron Hardie making the cut.
Notably, key players Pat Cummins (wrist injury) and Glenn Maxwell (on paternity leave) will miss the South Africa tour, leaving 16 players fit for the series.
Considering the busy schedule and the Ashes series ahead, it is anticipated that some of the multi-format players like Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and David Warner may not feature in all five games during the tour.
The extended squad also includes wicketkeeping option Josh Inglis and all-rounders Ashton Agar, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis. In the bowling department, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, and Adam Zampa have been included alongside Hardie and Sangha.
Chief selector George Bailey expressed confidence in the squad, praising the group’s skill and experience in limited-overs cricket. “There is an enormous amount of skill and experience in the group, which you need in a World Cup,” Bailey stated.
As the ODI World Cup approaches, Australia will closely evaluate their options during the tour matches in South Africa and India to finalize the 15-man squad. With strong contenders and promising talents in the extended squad, the Australian team is gearing up for an exciting campaign in the highly anticipated ODI World Cup.
