The Champions League T20 was a prestigious competition that showcased the top-performing T20 cricket teams from around the world. To qualify for the tournament, teams had to either win their domestic tournament or secure a high enough position in their league.

The initial concept of the tournament was developed by organizers from India, South Africa, and Australia. The first edition was expanded to include teams from England, West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, making it a truly global event.

The tournament format underwent several changes throughout its six editions. In the inaugural tournament held in 2009, twelve teams participated and were initially divided into four groups of three teams each. Every team faced each other once in the group stage, and the top two teams from each group advanced to the knockout stage.
