The final match turned out to be a thrilling contest, although it was not a high-scoring encounter. The toss was won by the Chargers, who elected to bat first. However, their innings got off to a rocky start as RCB skipper Anil Kumble dismissed the Chargers’ captain, Gilchrist, for a three-ball duck. Vinay Kumar added to the pressure by sending Tirumalasetti Suman back to the pavilion in the fourth over.

Despite the early setbacks, Andrew Symonds played with aggression and freedom. The right-hander struck four boundaries and a six in his quickfire knock of 33 off 21 balls before being bowled by Kumble. With the score at 58 for three in the ninth over, the Chargers were under immense pressure. Herschelle Gibbs, however, held his ground and went on to score a crucial half-century off 47 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes. He found support in Rohit Sharma, as the duo steadied the ship with a partnership of 52 runs for the fourth wicket.

The Chargers’ innings received another blow when Kumble dismissed Rohit, who contributed 24 runs off 23 balls with a four and a six. Gibbs remained unbeaten, but his innings lacked the necessary momentum as the Chargers could only reach a modest total of 143 for six in their allotted 20 overs. At the halfway mark, it was evident that the score might be below par.

In pursuit of the target, the Challengers got off to a solid start with Jacques Kallis hitting three boundaries. However, RP Singh provided the Chargers with the breakthrough by dismissing Kallis early on. Manish Pandey, too, failed to make an impact and fell to the spin of Pragyan Ojha after scoring only four runs.

Roelof van der Merwe then took charge, smashing his way to a quickfire 32 off just 21 balls, including one four and three sixes. Ojha, however, managed to dismiss him, providing the Chargers with a much-needed breakthrough. From that point onwards, the momentum shifted heavily in favor of the Chargers. Ross Taylor and Robin Uthappa tried to resurrect the innings with contributions of 27 and 17 runs respectively, but their efforts proved insufficient as RCB ended up at 137 for nine.

Despite being on the losing side, Anil Kumble’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Match award for his four-wicket haul. On the other hand, Ojha was the standout performer for the Chargers with his three-wicket haul.
