Sourav Ganguly, also known as the “Prince of Calcutta,” is one of the most renowned Indian cricketers and former captain of the Indian national team. He is also well known for his involvement in the Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the most popular cricket leagues in the world. Sourav Ganguly IPL career spanned four seasons, from 2008 to 2011, during which he played for two different teams: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Pune Warriors India (PWI).

Sourav Ganguly IPLÂ was initially bought by KKR in the inaugural IPL season for a whopping $ 1.09 million, making him one of the highest-paid players in the league. He was also appointed as the captain of the team, which was co-owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Ganguly led KKR in 37 matches over three seasons, from 2008 to 2010. However, despite his success as a player and captain, he was not retained by the team for the 2011 season.
Ganguly’s IPL career got off to a slow start, as he struggled with his form in the initial few matches. However, he soon regained his touch and started playing match-winning innings for KKR. He scored his first IPL fifty in the fourth match of the season against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), scoring 51 runs off 46 balls. Ganguly was also instrumental in KKR’s first win of the season against Deccan Chargers, where he scored 91 runs off 57 balls, which included 11 fours and 4 sixes.

Ganguly’s highest score in the IPL was 91, which he achieved during his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite not scoring a century, Ganguly was able to score 7 half-centuries during his IPL career. Additionally, Ganguly was able to score 30 or more runs on 9 different occasions and 20 or more runs 3 times during his IPL career.
Throughout his IPL career, Ganguly had a strike rate of 110.3 and an average of 25.51 in 902 IPL balls. Despite these numbers not being particularly high, Ganguly was still a valuable asset to his team due to his experience and leadership abilities.

It is important to note that Ganguly’s performance in the IPL cannot be fully assessed based solely on his statistics. Ganguly was able to bring a unique set of skills to his teams that went beyond just his ability to score runs. He was known for his leadership skills, and his ability to motivate and inspire his teammates. Additionally, Ganguly was a skilled fielder and was able to contribute to his team’s performance in this way as well.
One of the most memorable moments of Ganguly’s IPL career came during the inaugural IPL season in 2008. During a match against the Kings XI Punjab, Ganguly took an incredible catch to dismiss the dangerous batsman, Shaun Marsh. Ganguly’s catch was later named as the “Best Catch of the Tournament” and is still considered to be one of the best catches in IPL history.
Ganguly was also known for his ability to handle pressure situations during his IPL career. In a match against the Mumbai Indians during the 2010 season, Ganguly was able to lead his team to victory despite needing to chase down a total of 182 runs in just 14.2 overs. Ganguly scored 75 runs off just 50 balls in this match and was named as the “Man of the Match” for his performance.
Despite retiring from cricket in 2012, Ganguly’s impact on the IPL and on Indian cricket as a whole is still felt to this day. He went on to become the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2019 and has been instrumental in the development of the Indian cricket team.
