Two things stood out in South Africa’s win in the first match. While the old vile fox Imran Tahir spun them to victory with another five-wicket-haul, debutant Rassie van der Dussen capped off his debut with a calculated 44-ball-56 after de Kock and Cloete fell cheaply, to take his side what eventually turned out to be a match-winning total of 6-160.

South Africa rested JP Duminy in the last game with a view to giving youngsters like Cloete, Jonker game-time, they’re expected to do the same in the second game by getting a closer look-in to Tabraiz Shamsi after having rested Imran Tahir for the remainder of the series.

Beleaguered Zimbabwe seek a turnaround

It’s been seven months and Zimbabwe are yet to taste a win after their shock defeat to the UAE in the World Cup Qualifiers at home. Sanctions, tumultuous relationship with ZC and as Sean Williams admitted just that it still haunts the side.

But, a win against their ‘Big Brothers’ will go a long way in healing some of the pain. The tourists’ problems have been their batting. While their bowlers have consistently given them chasable targets, it is their batting that has faltered on more than one occasion. The likes of Hamilton Masakadza, Brandon Taylor did not get going again in the first match and it was only Peter Moore, who scored a 21-ball-44 that lent respectability to their total.

They’ll be relieved that their chief tormentor in Imran Tahir will not be available for the remainder of the series but a sterner examination awaits in the form of left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi and the way they cope up with it will define the course of the series.
