Vijay made his IPL debut in 2009 for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He had a decent start to his IPL career, scoring 60 runs in four matches at an average of 15. However, he did not get many opportunities to play in the following two seasons, and his performances were also below par.

In 2012, Vijay played for the CSK and had his best IPL season. He scored 336 runs in 14 matches at an average of 25.84 and a strike rate of 125.84. He also scored a century in that season, which helped CSK win the IPL title. Vijay continued his good form in the following season, scoring 312 runs in 15 matches at an average of 22.28 and a strike rate of 109.09. He played a crucial role in CSK’s campaign, helping them reach the final of the tournament.

In 2014, Vijay played for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and had an average season. He scored 207 runs in 11 matches at an average of 18.81 and a strike rate of 107.81. However, his performances in the 2015 season were much better, as he scored 251 runs in 11 matches at an average of 22.81 and a strike rate of 110.08.
