Sakariya’s journey to the IPL has been an inspiring one. He hails from a small village in Saurashtra, and his father is a tempo driver. Despite coming from a humble background, he had a burning passion for cricket, and he worked hard to make a name for himself in the sport. He started playing tennis ball cricket in his village, and eventually, he was picked for the Saurashtra U-19 team.
Sakariya’s big break came in 2018 when he was picked to play for Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He had a decent tournament, picking up 12 wickets in 8 matches. However, it was in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2019-20 that he caught the eye of the selectors. He picked up 10 wickets in 5 matches at an economy rate of 4.90.
In the IPL, Sakariya had to deal with a personal tragedy, as his younger brother passed away due to suicide during the tournament. However, he showed remarkable mental strength to continue playing and performing for his team. His performance in the tournament earned him a call-up to the Indian team for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.
Sakariya’s performance for India was also noteworthy. He made his debut in the first ODI and picked up 2 wickets, including that of Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka. He ended the series with 3 wickets from 3 matches.
Now, he will be looking forward to playing for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming season of the IPL. The Capitals had a good season in 2021, where they finished as runners-up. With the addition of Sakariya to their squad, their bowling attack looks even more potent.
Sakariya’s ability to bowl at the death will be a valuable asset for the Capitals. He has a good yorker and can vary his pace to keep the batsmen guessing. He also has a good slower ball, which he uses effectively to deceive the batsmen.
Sakariya’s left-arm angle will also be an advantage for the Capitals. Most of their bowlers are right-arm pacers, and Sakariya’s left-arm angle will bring a new dimension to their attack. He will also be able to create rough patches for the right-handers and make it difficult for them to score.
