The Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) season was nothing short of sensation as players made their presence feel with both bat and ball. While the batters were breaking records left, right and center, it was the bowlers that didn’t sit back and they too made their impact. With the Purple Cap on offer, bowlers from 10 teams fought intensively to claim the prize.
Player | Team | Mat | Wickets | Best | Average | Economy | 4-fer | 5-fer |
Yuzvendra Chahal | Rajsathan Royals | 17 | 27 | 5/40 | 19.51 | 7.75 | 1 | 1 |
Wanindu Hasaranga | Royal Challengers Bangalore | 16 | 26 | 5/18 | 16.53 | 7.54 | 1 | 1 |
Kagiso Rabada | Punjab Kings | 13 | 23 | 4/33 | 17.65 | 8.45 | 2 | 0 |
Umran Malik | Sunrisers Hyderabad | 14 | 22 | 5/25 | 20.18 | 9.03 | 1 | 1 |
Kuldeep Yadav | Delhi Capitals | 14 | 21 | 4/14 | 19.95 | 8.43 | 2 | 0 |
With addition of two new teams the majority of the franchises were shaken upside-down for IPL 2022 as players made their switch. Part of such switch was Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star Yuzvendra Chahal, as he switched to Rajasthan Royals (RR) and hit the ground running.
Chahal’s exploits saw him scalp 27 wickets in 17 matches that saw Rajasthan Royals reach their first IPL final in 14 years. Chahal was given a good run by his replacement at RCB, Wanindu Hasaranga who ended with 26 wickets.

The tense battle for the Purple Cap went down to the final match of the IPL as Chahal got his reward. Had Chahal not scalped a wicket in the IPL final, it would have been Wanindu Hasaranga that could have walked out with the Purple Cap in IPL 2022 on best economy rate.
Both Hasaranga and Chahal snared a fifer to their name in the IPL 2022. Kagiso Rabada made the podium with 23 scalps to his name for the Punjab Kings, and ultimately missed out on the Purple Cap as his team failed to make the playoffs. It is also worth noting that Rabada only played 13 matches, four less than the Purple Cap winner Chahal.
Pace sensation Umran Malik and spin superstar Kuldeep Yadav were the other players to make the top five for most wickets in the IPL 2022. Both Umran and Kuldeep scalped 22 and 21 wickets respectively and missed out on the opportunity to win Purple Cap as their team didn’t make the cut for the playoffs.
Chahal by winning the Purple Cap for most wickets became the sixth Indian to win the prize. He joins an elite list of Indian players to have won the Purple Cap.
