Danushka Gunathliaka is a Sri Lankan cricketer who has represented all formats at the international level. Born on 17 March 1991, Danushka is a left-handed opening batsman who bowls off-break and plays for Colombo at the domestic level. He made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka in a match against West Indies on 1 November 2015. His T20I debut came a few months later against New Zealand on 7 January 2016. After a wait of a year, he finally got the Test cap against India on 26 July 2017.

Gunathilaka has been in and out of the team owing to injuries and disciplinary actions. On 28 June 2021, the Panadura-born was handed a one-year suspension by the Sri Lanka Cricket for breaching the bio-bubble during Sri Lanka’s tour of England. Alongside him, Niroshan Dickwella and Kushal Mendis too were suspended for the same duration. However, the ban was lifted early in January 2022. On 8 January 2022, He retired from Tests at the age of 30 to shift his focus to white-ball cricket.

Danushka, who loves batting on quick tracks, has been a constant contributor in the limited-overs side more than the Test cricket. In ODIs, he shot to fame in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy against India, where he scored 77 runs and helped the Sri Lankan side chase down 321 – the highest chase ever in the history of the tournament. He scores his maiden ODI hundred against Zimbabwe on 6 July 2017, followed by another sensational knock of 87 runs in the next outing. The southpaw then scored his second ODI hundred against Pakistan on 2 October 2019 in the second match of the series.
It’s the franchise cricket, Gunathilaka had a fiery show with the willow throughout the inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League held in 2020-21. Averaging 59.50 and striking in excess of 140, the Galle Gladiators’ mainstay amassed 476 runs across 10 matches that comprised 4 fifties and a high score of 94*. His performances proved to be the main contributor to the Gladiators’ paving their way to the Final. In the 2021-22 edition of the tournament, his form took a beating, yet he finished as the second-highest run-getter for his side, amassing 226 runs while striking close to 130 with 2 fifties to his name. Having proven his forte in the limited-overs, Gunathilaka took a decision to retire from Test cricket on 8 January 2022. He had last played a Test match against New Zealand during Sri Lanka’s tour in 2018-19, with scores of 8 and 4 in the first and second innings respectively.
