England cricketer James Anderson has been fined 15% of his total match fee of the 5th Test between England and India. The pace bowler was fined by ICC as he breached the code of conduct for players prescribed by ICC.
According to ICC, Anderson behaved aggressively with umpire Kumar Dharmasena on day two of the 5th Test and violated the article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which is about showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match’.
The incident happened in India’s first innings. In the 29th over, Anderson appealed for leg before wicket against Virat Kohli. The umpire Dharmasena ruled the decision in the favor of the batsman and signaled not-out.
But Anderson was convinced about the appeal and urged Joe Root to go for the review. The replays showed that although the ball would have crashed on to the stumps, the impact was on the line. Hence the third umpire stayed with the on-field umpire’s call and refused England’s appeal.
As Dharmasena’s decision proved decisive in this case, Anderson wasn’t happy and he expressed his dissent at the end of the over. The England bowler snatched his cap and jumper from Dharmsena and then spoke with him in an aggressive manner.
The match referee Andy Pycroft noticed this incident and penalized Anderson. The bowler admitted the offence and also accepted the sanctions. So, there was no need of an official hearing.
Along with fine of 15% of match fees, Anderson has also earned one demerit point. The system of demerit points is in play since September 2016 and since then this is the right-arm pace bowler’s first offence.
Anderson is been in stunning form during this five Test match series and is the leading wicket-taker so far. But he has failed to dismiss the best batsman of the series, Virat Kohli. With only one more innings to go, it will be interesting to see whether Anderson gets Kohli’s out or not.
