1. South Africa – 438 runs vs Australia

South Africa cricket team holds the record for the highest chase in ODI cricket. It has to be one of the greatest matches in the history of 50-over cricket. Batting first, Australia on account of skipper Ricky Ponting’s 164 runs posted a mammoth total of 434 runs on the board and it almost seemed that Australia will win quite comfortably.

But this wasn’t the case as South Africa pulled off the highest chase in the history of ODIs. Skipper Herschelle Gibbs lead from the front and smashed 175 and was well supported by Graeme Smith, who scored 90 runs, and helped the Proteas to chase the target with one wicket in hand. Notably, their 438-run mark is still the highest second innings total in ODIs.

2. South Africa – 372 runs vs Australia

South Africa share some history against Australia when it comes to chasing in ODIs. After pulling off the highest chase in ODIs, South Africa are also the proud owner of chasing the second-highest total in the history of ODIs. Batting first, Australia rode on centuries by David Warner and Steve Smith and posted a total of 371 runs on the board.

Chasing the target, Proteas openers Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla gave their team a desired start scoring 90 and 45 respectively. However, the limelight was stolen by David Miller, who came out all guns blazing and notched up 79-ball 118 to help South Africa chase the mammoth total of 372 runs with four balls to spare.

3. England – 364 runs vs West Indies

If England recorded the highest first innings total in ODIs, they also have the third-highest chase to their name in the ODI. It was during England’s tour to West Indies that saw many records were created. Batting first, in the first ODI, Universe Boss Chris Gayle smashed a ton and got the support of Shai Hope and Darren Bravo who scored 64 and 40 and West Indies put a total of 360 runs on the board.

Gayle’s heroics was outclassed by Jason Roy and Joe Root who smashed centuries and helped England to complete the comfortable 6-wicket chase. This also recorded the third-highest chase in the history of ODIs.

4. India – 362 runs vs Australia

No Indian fan can forget the can home series against Australia in 2013. The series saw many records being made and broken. One such among them was the fourth highest chase in ODI. Batting first, Australia on account of half-centuries by their top-five batters posted a total of 359 runs on the board.

Chasing the target, India openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan left no stone unturned and went from the ball 1. While the left-hander fell for 95 runs, Sharma continued to assert this authority. He and Virat Kohli both notched up their tons as India chased the target comfortably with 8 wickets in hands and three balls to spare.

5. Australia – 359 runs vs India

It was during Australia’s tour to India in 2019 when they recorded the fifth-highest chase in ODI. Batting first. Indian on back of Shikhar Dhawan’s 115-ball 143 run knock and Rohit Sharma’s 92-ball 95 knock helped visitors post a gigantic total of 358 runs on the board in Mohali.

While chasing the target, Australia lost David Warner on golden duck and it almost seemed that the visitors ruined their chances of winning. However, Peter Handscomb and Usman Khawaja led Australia’s fight and scored a century and 91 respectively to take their team close to the target. But it was Ashton Turner who stole the limelight scored quick fire 84 runs to help his team win the match by four wickets and with 13 balls to spare.
