Cheteshwar Pujara’s maiden hundred in England is receiving plenty of appreciation and Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar is not behind. Applauding Pujara’s Herculean effort, Bangar said that talent can not only be seen in class but can be seen in bloody-mindedness. Bangar added that Pujara showed mental strength, patience and the concentration today.
Pujara came to crease in the 8th over and remained unbeaten throughout the innings. In the process, he scored his first hundred in England and steered India to a vital first-innings lead of 27 runs. Importantly, Pujara added 78 runs with the last two wickets to arrest the damage done by Moeen Ali’s five-wicket haul.
Bangar admitted that Pujara’s lack of runs in his last few Tests was due to some technical flaws. The former Indian batsman said that Pujara was coming off a rough patch and hadn’t really scored as many runs as he’d have liked in the last 10-11 innings for India.
Bangar then explained the work done by the support staff to help Pujara. The Indian batting coach noted that the right-hand batsman had to get his balance right and also had to get his footwork right and according Bangar, he along with Ravi Shastri worked on these two areas.
Decoding Pujara’s magnificent innings that lasted for 257 balls, Bangar said that Pujara showed a lot of composure, clarity of thought and great discipline in his judgement outside off.
Speaking about the times ahead, Bangar was very positive about Pujara’s form. He hoped that with three innings remaining, if he continues in this fashion, it will put the team in winning positions.
At the same time, Bangar didn’t hold back while criticizing the approach of other Indian batsmen courtesy of whom the team slipped to 195 for 8 from a dominating position of 161 for 3 wickets down.
Talking about Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin’s wickets, Bangar said that these two dismissals were pretty soft. Hardik wasn’t on the top of the ball while driving and Ashwin tried the reverse-sweep at a pretty early stage in his innings.
