Somya Sarkar open to embracing new batting role

Bangladesh batsman Soumya Sarkar reckons he is ready to bat down the order if it serves the purpose for his side in the upcoming Asia Cup.

Sarkar hasn’t featured in an ODI since the 2017 tour of South Africa, and for him to reclaim his spot at the top of the order as Liton Das is most likely to share the opening slot with Tamim Iqbal.

But the team management is mulling on a different role altogether for Sarkar. According to the BCB sources, the team is considering him to fill in the lower middle-order spot in the ODI.

“What matters the most is whether I can help the team win regardless of my batting position,” Sarkar told the reporters at Mirpur. “Doesn’t matter if I am opening or batting at seven, my job is to perform well and if I can perform, the team will also get some support. If I have to play there, then I will try to play according to the situation,” he added.

 “I am always ready to bowl if that suits the purpose of the team,” Sarkar said.

“When I began my career at that point we had only one or two pace bowlers but now as there are three pace bowlers so now I don’t get that opportunity like before,” he added.

Bangladesh kickstarts their Asia Cup 2018 campaign against Sri Lanka in the tournament opener on September 15 in Dubai.
