Anderson on the verge of breaking McGrath’s Record
“James Anderson will never be beaten once he goes past me,” believes Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath.
Australian fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath, who hung his boots in 2007 tops the Test cricket’s fast-bowling wicket-taking record, but James Anderson could soon break his record and become the most successful fast bowler in Test history.
McGrath heaped praises on his former Ashes rival James Anderson and said that no one will ever be able to go past Anderson’s record once he smashes McGrath’s record.
Anderson, who has bagged 557 wickets so far is just seven wickets behind to go past McGrath’s 563 and he has a chance to achieve the feat in the Southampton Test against India slated to begin from 30 August.
“Records are nice and I have been very proud to be the fast bowler with highest wickets in Test history, but I will be very proud when Jimmy goes past me,” McGrath said in an interview.
McGrath believes Anderson can surpass Kumble’s record too
McGrath also compared Anderson’s swing to that to Wasim Akram’s and lauded Anderson’s ability to generate swing from both the sides.
“Jimmy is a class. His ability to swing the ball in both the directions is rare. I can only think of Wasim Akram who could do that,” he added.
“Once he goes past me it would be interesting to note where he sets the bar. With the amount of T20 cricket being played these days, I don’t think any fast bowler would ever be able to go past him.”
McGrath also said that Anderson was capable of reaching 600 Test wickets and break India spinner Anil Kumble’s record of 619 wickets, who sits on the third spot on the all-time Test wicket-taking list.
The record is topped by Sri Lanka’s Muthiah Muralidaran who has 800 Test wickets to his name followed by Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne who is second on the list with 70 Test wickets.
