Shakib Al Hasan is a professional cricketer from Bangladesh who presently represents his country in all the game’s three formats. He started playing the game primarily as a bowler but worked on his batting skills to be part of the all-time list of great all-rounders. With his left-handed aggressive batting style and slow left-arm bowling, Shakib could walk into any side by virtue of his batting or bowling alone. Although he has had a chequered career in both IPL and his national side due to various factors, including an international ban after the 2019 ICC World Cup, he made many match-winning contributions with the bat and ball to the sides he has played for.

One of the best all-rounders of the game, Shakib Al Hasan was born on 24 March 1987 in Magura, Khulna in Bangladesh. He started playing at an early age and was often hired for playing in various local village tournaments. He underwent training for six months in a government-run sports training institute and made his debut for the U-17 side in an Afro-Asia Cup in 2003. Shakib got his ODI cap for the Bangladesh national team in Aug 2006 and got into the test team making his debut against India on 18 May 2007. As a captain of his national side in 2010, he led his team to a 4-0 thumping victory in the home ODI series against New Zealand.

His other notable performances include being only the third Bangladesh batter to score a double hundred in a test match against New Zealand in 2017. He is the first all-rounder to score over 600 runs and take ten wickets in a single ICC World Cup which was held in 2019. He is quoted to have said, “The IPL experience has helped me improve my game for Bangladesh team”.

Shakib Al Hasan was available for the 2009 and 2010 IPL auctions. Surprisingly he was not picked up by any of the eight franchises although he was almost at the top of his game. During the IPL auction in 2011, Shakib was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders. He made his debut in the tournament on 15 April 2011 in a match against Rajasthan Royals. During IPL 2012 KKR won their maiden title in the final against CSK where Shakib made a quickfire contribution with the bat to contribute to the winning total.

Shakib kept playing for KKR till IPL 2017. His all-round performance was one of many factors responsible for KKR’s title win in IPL- 2014. Contributing both with the bat and ball in that competition, he scored 227 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 149.34 and picked up 11 wickets in 13 matches at an economy of 6.68.

He had an average outing in IPL-2015 and played only four matches. In 2016 IPL, Shakib scored 66*, his best score so far in IPL, and combined with Yusuf Pathan to score unbeaten 134, the highest fifth-wicket partnership of IPL. In IPL 2017 he played only one match as he was called back for the national side.

For IPL 2018, on being released by KKR, Shakib was contracted by Sunrisers Hyderabad. While playing for them, he became the second T20 player to take 300 wickets and score 4,000 runs in the shortest format of the game.

In the 2019 Indian Premier League also he played only one match as he was called back for national duty. He was released by SRH ahead of the 2020 IPL auctions.

Shakib was first contracted in 2011 by the Kolkata Knight Riders for US$ 450,000. In the IPL-2014 and in subsequent years till 2017, Shakib was retained by KKR for a league fee of INR 2.80 crore. With Sunrisers Hyderabad, his salary took a little dip for two years at INR 2 crore.

He was listed at the highest base price of INR 2 crore for the 2021 IPL auction and was subsequently bought by his former team KKR again for a price of INR 3.2 crores (US$450,000).

Shakib is a left-arm slow orthodox bowler who has maintained an overall economy rate of under 8 in his IPL career. He was mainly utilized in the middle overs.
