Milkha Singh was one of India’s greatest sportspersons ever. The legendary athlete, also known as the ‘Flying Sikh’, was the first person to put India on the global map in the Track and Field arena. His autobiography, ‘The Race of My life’ was published in 2013.
Singh was recruited in the Indian Army in 1951. It was here that he first received the proper training to sprint. He soon realized his true potential and went on to break endless records on the national and international stage.
Milkha Singh Race Record
Singh was at the peak of his fitness in the late 1950s. He got 4 gold medals for India in the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games. He also received gold in the 1958 Commonwealth Games. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1959. His most famous moment arguably came in the 1956 Olympics in the 400m race. Although he came fourth, Singh beat the pre-games Olympic record as well as made a National record which stood for 44 years.

Milkha Singh was born on 20 November 1929 in the Punjab province of erstwhile British India. He died at the age of 91 on 18 June 2021.
Milkha Singh Wife
Singh married Nirmal Saini in 1955. She was a former captain of the Indian Women’s Volleyball team. She died on 13 June 2021, also due to Covid. They are survived by three daughters and a son. Singh and his wife had adopted another son in 1999 whose father had martyred in the Kargil War.

Jeev Milkha Singh is a professional golfer who became the first Indian to break into the Top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings in October 2006. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2007.

Milkha Singh Covid
Milkha Singh reportedly died of Covid related complications on Friday, 18 June 2021. There was an outpour of heartfelt messages on the news and social media mourning the loss of the legend. He pushed several boundaries in his lifetime and leaves behind a legacy that knows no bounds.
