Cricket Career

Shami was born in a poor family in Sahaspur village in Amroha. His father was a farmer. From the childhood, he always wanted to become a fast bowler. He moved to Kolkata in 2005 in order to pursue his dreams. Shami made his first-class debut for Bengal in 2012. His ability to hold an upright seam made him one of the known figures in domestic circuit.

His Test debut in Kolkata was a memorable one as he picked up 9 wickets which also included a 5-wicket haul. India normally relies on spinners to do the bulk of the work at home but Shami’s performance proved that a new era of India’s fast bowling has started.

Shami made his international debut against Pakistan in 2013 and helped India register a thrilling win over the arch-rivals. Soon, he became India’s potent wicket-taking option. He played an important role in the 2015 World Cup and helped India reach the semifinals. Shami’s arrival to Test cricket was even better as he took the West Indian batting lineup with his superb display of reverse swing bowling.

Despite suffering injuries in his career and setbacks in his marriage, Shami was able to perform at his best. His fitness has improved over the years and now he is known to bowl long spells.
