ICC Meeting Live: Will BCCI Lose T20 World Cup Hosting Rights?

T20 World Cup: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has two major tasks lined up as they have to successfully organise the remaining 31 matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Phase 2 and then this year’s T20 World Cup. In the meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) have scheduled a meeting today with all its members to discuss some important topics with the main focus on the developments regarding the T20 World Cup. Both the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah will be virtually present in the ICC meeting.

T20 World Cup: BCCI to Lose Hosting Rights

Recently, post their Special General Meeting (SGM), the BCCI announced that they will be requesting the ICC for an extension of time to decide on whether this year’s T20 World Cup will be hosted in India or not. However, the Indian board will be trying their level best to retain the hosting rights in case they decide to shift the mega event possibly to the UAE. With the IPL 2021 Phase 2 set to resume in UAE possibly between September 17-October 10, the major challenge will be to prepare competitive pitches for the T20 World Cup. Therefore, the ICC will talk to the BCCI representatives, Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah about the same.

The other major issue with regards to the T20 World Cup to be discussed in the ICC Meeting is the agenda of Tax Exemption. However, the BCCI had earlier promised the apex council of granting the necessary Tax Exemption in case the mega event is held in India, however, it will not be required if the tournament is shifted to the UAE. But if the BCCI fails to get a clearance from their government, then they have to bear the huge burden of around INR 900 crores. The next matter to be raised at the meet will be the ICC World Test Championships future as the current cycle ends with India vs New Zealand WTC Final on June 18. The Future Tours Programme (FTP) will also be discussed during the ICC meeting.

There will also be a discussion on the idea of increasing the number of participating teams to 14 in the 50-overs Men’s World Cup while the idea of having atleast one ICC event every year will be floated in the meet.
