WTC Final: ICC to Add ‘Sixth Day’ In IND vs NZ Test? Check Details

WTC Final: India and New Zealand will contest for the bragging rights in the ICC World Test Championship final from June 18-22.

New Zealand was the first team to qualify for the WTC Final. The Kiwis amassed 70 percentage points during the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship period that started on 1 August 2019 and finished second on the ICC points table.

India had to wait a bit longer but shrugged off the competition from England and Australia to finish with 72.2 percentage points.

The final countdown to WTC Final has begun. Indian team is stationed in Mumbai for a hard quarantine before departing for England, while the New Zealand team will have a two-game head start as the Kiwis will play two test matches against England starting June 2.

But before the all-important WTC Final, ICC finds itself in a big conundrum. The fans and cricket experts alike are all scratching their head over what happens if the WTC Final match ends in a draw? Which team will win the trophy in that scenario?

The common perception is that a joint winner will be declared if either team fails to win the game.

However, as per reports, the ICC is working upon playing conditions and may implement them in the IND vs NZ WTC Final match.

Why IND VS SA Tour Was Cancelled?

As per the existing playing conditions, the rules indicate that the match will go into the 6th day if there’s any loss in the number of playing hours over the first five days.

“The idea was to ensure that the match is played out in the 30 hours in the first five days. And the reserve day would come into play only if a total of 30 hours were not played in the first five days. That would have meant that the result had a lesser chance of being influenced by weather,” as per an ICC source to TOI.

But ICC could yet make changes and may add the “sixth day” to the usual five-day test match in any case, to decide the winner if both the teams are not separated at the end of five days.

The ICC have a meeting scheduled for June 01, where the cricket’s governing body is expected to finalise playing conditions for the world championship final and make them public.

As per reports, the ICC is not keen on declaring a joint winner as it would take the sheen off the competition that has been billed as a game-changer for Test Cricket.
