Highest paid captain list is out. Virat Kohli is not at the top!

Highest paid captain: Team India’s captain Virat Kohli is definitely one of the most popular and celebrated names in the cricket fraternity due to his phenomenal achievements and disciplined attitude towards the game. In 2020, Kohli was the only Indian in Forbes’ rich list of top 100 athletes where the right-handed batsman occupied the 66th position with a yearly earning of nearly INR 196 crores. However, in a really astonishing fact, Virat Kohli is surprisingly not the highest paid captain when compared to the other skippers around the world.

Joe Root is the highest paid captain; not Virat Kohli

Indian captain across the three formats, Virat Kohli, who is one of the three players in the Grade A+ contract receives annual salary of INR 7 crores. The Delhi-born cricketer also hold an IPL contract worth INR 17 crore with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, England’s Test captain Joe Root is currently ahead of Kohli while being rated amongst the highest paid captain in the cricket world right now. According to The Cricketer.com, England’s red-ball contract holders including Joe Root receive annual salary of around £700,000 (INR 7.22 crores approx.).

This also means that not only Root, but England’s speedster Jofra Archer earns more than Virat Kohli as an international cricketer. As per reports, England’s white-ball players’ earnings amounts to around £170,000 (INR 1,753 crores) while on the other hand, India’s Grade A and Grade B categories receive INR 5 and 3 crores respectively during the year.

India is all set for a long English summer starting with the all-important World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand from June 18 in Southampton and then the Virat Kohli-led side is scheduled to face England in a five-match Test series which will begin from August 4. After two incredible Test series wins against Australia and England, the Indian Test team will be quite hopeful of first lifting the inaugural WTC title and then registering their first Test series win in England since 2007.
